What is Mounjaro KwikPen?
Mounjaro® KwikPen (tirzepatide) is one of the new injectable treatments for weight loss. It is a prescription medicine used alongside a calorie-controlled diet and exercise for weight loss.
Mounjaro, a medication initially used for type 2 diabetes, has recently been approved by the Medicines and Health Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for weight loss and weight management in adults aged 18 and over.
Who can use Mounjaro as a weight loss treatment?
Mounjaro is used as a weight loss medicine alongside a calorie-controlled diet and increased physical activity in adults aged 18 years old and over, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or over. If you suffer from weight-related conditions such as (prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart problems) and have a BMI of 27 or over, it might also be suitable for you. Other eligibility criteria also applied.
When you go through the online consultation, we will assess your suitability for Mounjaro. Our prescribers will assess your suitability based on your consultation.
A Guide to Mounjaro Dosage
Mounjaro® comes in a pre-filled, injection pen. Each pen contains tirzepatide, the active ingredient, in varying strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg, and 15mg.
You inject Mounjaro® under the skin of your stomach, thigh, or upper arm once a week. We’ll start you on a low dose (2.5mg) and gradually increase it every four weeks until you reach a maintenance dose that’s right for you (typically 5mg, 10mg, or a maximum of 15mg). This gradual approach helps your body adjust and minimises potential side effects.
Is Mounjaro different from Ozempic and Wegovy?
All three medicines are approved for weight loss by the MHRA. Ozempic and Wegovy contain an active ingredient called semaglutide which works with the GLP-1 receptor. In the case of Mounjaro, the active ingredient is tirzepatide which acts on both GLP-1 and the GIP receptors. This combination effect on receptors has shown to be more effective than the drugs that work on the GLP-1 receptor alone.
How should I store the Mounjaro KwikPen?
We recommend that you store the Mounjaro KwikPen in the fridge (2 °C – 8 °C) and return it to the fridge after each use. Do not freeze. According to the manufacturer, the Mounjaro KwikPen can be stored unrefrigerated not above 30 ºC for up to 30 days and then the pen must be discarded.
How can I dispose of the used pen?
Your first order will include a sharps bin and a special container for safely disposing of used needles. After each injection, carefully place the needle into the sharps bin. Once you’ve finished all 4 doses and removed the needle, the pen itself can be disposed of in your household waste or the sharps bin.
Contact your local council for the sharps bin collection service for safe disposal when your bin is full. You can also purchase additional sharps bins from us. Ask the pharmacy team in-store.
What are the potential side effects of Mounjaro?
Some people may experience side effects like nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhoea while taking Mounjaro®. These side effects are usually temporary and tend to improve within a few weeks as your body adjusts to the medication.
To minimise potential side effects like nausea or diarrhoea, which typically subside within a few weeks, your Mounjaro® dose will be gradually increased every four weeks. You can also manage any initial discomfort by getting fresh air, sipping cold drinks, and eating smaller, more frequent meals.
While uncommon (affects 1in 100), some people taking Mounjaro® may experience side effects such as an increased risk of gallstone disease, pancreatitis, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), or severe allergic reactions. Additionally, those with diabetic retinopathy may notice changes in their vision. It’s important to contact our clinical team if you experience any concerning symptoms.
Rarely (1 in 1000), Mounjaro® may cause kidney problems, including reduced function or failure. Signs include a metallic taste in your mouth, decreased urination, and unexplained bruising. If you notice these symptoms, contact our clinical team immediately.
Although serious side effects are rare, they can include allergic reactions or pancreatitis. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms like difficulty breathing, a swollen face or throat, or severe abdominal pain. What is the starting dose of Mounjaro?
Mounjaro Kwikpen comes in different strengths. The starting dose is Mounjaro Kwikpen 2.5mg. The dose is administered once weekly. Each Pen contains four doses.
How do I use the Mounjaro KwikPen?
Mounjaro is administered once a week using a pre-filled pen called the Mounjaro KwikPen. Injections are given under the skin of your stomach area (abdomen), thigh, or upper arm. It is important to remember to rotate your injection site regularly, even if you select the same site such as the upper arm, you should use a different spot for the injection each time.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Mounjaro?
In case of a missed dose, If it’s been 4 days or less since you should have used Mounjaro:
- Use it as soon as you remember
- Then inject your next dose as usual on your scheduled day
If it’s been more than 4 days since you should have used Mounjaro:
- Skip the missed dose
- Then inject your next dose as usual on your scheduled day
Just remember not to use a double dose to make up for any missed doses. The minimum time between two doses must be at least 3 days.
What consumables do I need with the injectable weight loss medication?
To self-administer the weight loss injection, you need three main consumables. These are pre-injection alcohol wipes to clean the injection site, disposable needles and a safeguard sharps bin to safely dispose of the used needles. We provide a starter pack of the consumables with the first injection order that contains a small number of wipes, needles and a safeguard sharps bin. Any subsequent consumables can be purchased from the pharmacy as required.

Who might be able to use the Wegovy Pen for weight loss?
Wegovy® is a prescription weight-loss injection designed for adults with a Body Mass Index, BMI, of 30 or higher. If you have weight-related health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, or high cholesterol, you may be eligible with a BMI of 27 or higher.
However, if you have Type 2 diabetes but your BMI is below 27, we cannot provide this treatment through this service. Subject to consultation, BMI and suitability criteria.

This gradual approach allows your body to adjust to the medication and helps improve tolerability. The available strengths are 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg.
How long is the Wegovy treatment?
Wegovy® is designed to be a long-term treatment for weight loss and weight maintenance, working alongside healthy lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. While it can be prescribed for up to two years, the exact duration will depend on your individual weight loss goals and progress. It’s important to remember that maintaining weight loss after stopping Wegovy® requires an ongoing commitment to a healthy lifestyle. This means making sustainable changes to your diet and incorporating regular physical activity into your routine.
How many doses does a Wegovy pen contain?
The Wegovy FlexTouch Pen contains four weekly doses in total. After using your second dose, you can order the next pen through our website to allow enough time.
How to safely dispose of used needles?
Your first order includes a sharps bin for safe disposal of used needles. After each injection, place the needle in the sharps bin. Once the pen is empty (after 4 doses) and the needle is removed, you can dispose of the pen in your household waste or the sharps bin.
